New details have emerged for Tom Clancy's The Division, which ranks amongst the most anticipated game of 2015. Though it has already presented a gameplay demo at E3 2014 back in June, Ubisoft has not revealed many details about the game.
Even so, snippets of information do crop up from time to time. The most recent leak reveals that players will start the game in a safe zone somewhere on Manhattan Island in a dystopian New York City. This information tidbit comes courtesy of the Examiner, which recently interviewed the The Division's executive producer, Fredrik Rundqvist.
"We have what we call a Hub or a Green Zone. On the West Coast of midtown, that's where people start off," Rundqvist explained. "It's kind of a social hub where you can meet other players, you can re-spec, change your characters, etc. That's basically where you start off."
In real life, the term Green Zone refers to a massive heavily-fortified safe area within the city of Baghdad during the Iraq War.
Set in New York City of the near future, The Division takes place in a land where law and society no longer exists following a deadly-virus outbreak that kills most of the world's population. The streets descend in chaos, and innocents are the first to suffer.
Players will be part of a special paramilitary unit created by remnants of the government to restore order. Simply called The Division, this citizen army is well-armed with advanced weaponry and mobile technology.
The use of app-based devices was something that was greatly explored in Ubisoft's more recent title, Watch Dogs. One game feature that was highly regarded in the game was the ability to purchase useful items.
A similar economy system exists in The Division, which allows player to trade items in the Green Zone. Money apparently has no value in the game. Even so, Ubisoft is still working on the trading feature, says Rundqvist. He also confirmed that players can change their physical appearances such as clothes and facial hair.
Tom Clancy's The Division will be released in 2015 for the Xbox One, PS4, and the PC.
