As the trade deadline approaches, the Boston Red Sox have to be surprised at how they will have to plan the rest of the season. Many teams are hunting around to find the tools they need to keep working at a championship season like the Red Sox had last year, but for Boston this year, it's all about getting the most out of deals to gear up for the future.
Reports out of Boston by ESPN have Peavy on a quick train out of town. Apparently the St. Louis Cardinals have had scouts watching the struggling starter's game, and Boston is seriously considering a trade.
Peavy, picked up by the Bo-sox at last year's trade deadline, is just 1-7 with a 4.64 ERA in 18 starts. The 2007 Cy Young winner is eligible for free agency after the season. Boston owes him close to $7 million, and until recently showed no real signs they might trade him.
Just a short time ago he was buying a duck boat the team used in the World Championship parade, a reminder of the great year he helped the Red Sox win it all.
Things have changed though, and Peavy's stats reflect the frustration the team now feels. Overall the Red Sox are 40-51 so far this year.
With Jaime Garcia and Michael Wacha on the disabled list, the Cardinals are seeking rotation help as they try to grow their 50-42 record in the right direction and maintain their perrenial postseason success. Currently they are 2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.
Other teams like the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays have been looking for rotation help also, but it is doubtful Boston will trade Peavy within the American League East.
Peavy told reporters after Tuesday's game that he expects to be dealt somewhere, especially after speaking to general manager Ben Cherington before the game.
"He was honest with me," Peavy said, according to ESPN "I don't know the ins and outs of really all that's been talked about, but I do know there have been conversations."
