The Philadelphia Phillies season is a dumpster fire that is turning into a 4-alarm quickly. Currently they are 8.5 games back in the National League East, at 36-46.
After a brief glimmer of hope early this month where it seemed they might be able to get things under control, they have dropped two straight, and have only won two out of the last 10.
Before the latest drop, there was a brief moment where Philadelphia management might have considered adding some pieces and trying to turn the season around, but now it's more than likely they will be up to moving some players to rebuild the team.
Even before the limited success the Phillies found, Ruben Amaro Jr., the team's general manager, told Philly.com that he was looking at all his options.
"I can't say there are any untouchables," he said. "We talked about this before. Some guys are less touchable than others, so to speak."
If there was one player who would seem to be untouchable, it would probably be shortstop Jimmy Rollins. Since coming into the league in 2001, He has spent his entire career with the Philadelphia Phillies. He's under contract for $11 million this season with a $11 million option for 2015. Also, Rollins has a limited no-trade clause.
But, alas, if you have been keeping up, you know anything can happen in baseball.
ESPN's Buster Olney writes that Rollins has made it known that he is open to a trade now that he has broken Mike Schmidt's hit record, but only to a strong contender.
The 35 year old shortstop has been better in 2015, but his numbers are not like they were a few years ago. Though his average is down, he's drawn more walks which has resulted in a respectable .332 on-base percentage. He's still a very solid defensive shortstop and has stolen 14 bases so far this year. He's batting .249 so far with 8 home runs.
Detroit is currently 46-34 and lead the American league Central. Many believe Rollins would make a great addition to the team, and could add veteran meddle to help them in the postseason.
They have a strong line-up, but are struggling to find a decent shortstop. They recently called up Eugenio Suarez to replace the injured Jose Iglesias, but he has not done much. Currently he's batting .279/364/485 with only 3 home runs and no stolen bases.
