Boston needs to figure it out, or this season is going to continue to die away slowly.
A bat is in dire need in beantown as the offensive production of the team has been lost this season. Rumors abound about how the Sox should find an outfielder to fix the problem, and the front runner seems to be Andre Ethier from the outfielder rich Dodgers. But two other players names keep popping up over the last few weeks; Seth Smith from the long-dead Padres, and Alex Gordon from the surprisingly robust Kansas City Royals.
The Red Sox are currently 6.5 games back in the AL East, at 35-41.
Fansided's Bosox Injection looks at Gordon this way:
"A very dependable left-handed bat most noted for hammering line-drives and feasting on Red Sox pitching. Gordon has hit Boston for a slash line of .359/.435/.614, but at Fenway Park that bumps up to .386/.463/.647 and he is a doubles machine."
Obviously Fenway suits Gordon, and he brings Gold Glove defense. So far he has hauled in 21 doubles this year.
While The Latin Post looks at Seth Smith from the Padres as a potential pick-up, but with big upsides.
"if the Red Sox want to save money and deal outside of the American League, then outfielder Seth Smith could be their man. Bringing in the left-handed hitter could make things interesting for the team going forward. Smith is having an underrated season with the San Diego Padres."
Smith is batting .286 with 8 homers and 16 doubles of his own.
The two player's numbers are similar, and Smith has shown mettle in handling the disappointment that is going on in San Diego right now. They are 32-44, and already over 13 games behind the Giants in the NL West.
If the Sox want to spend on other players too, maybe Smith is the way to go.
Gordon seems to be a Fenway sure-thing though, so how much Boston covets that seeming assurance is yet to be seen.
Either way, Boston needs new life, now.
