The Spurs lead the series at 3-2 and can eliminate their opponent with a win tonight in Oklahoma. In Game 5, the Spurs placed mostly perimeter-shooting post players besides Tim Duncan, helping the team's floor spacing which resulted in the 117-89 win.
Game 5 win is a stark reminder to Thunder that without a proper defensive strategy against the Spurs, they will fall short just as in Game 1 and 2. Even with Serge Ibaka back in the court, their hard earned two wins may not be enough to force a Game 7 in this series.
San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich has made shrewd moves that dramatically propelled his team with more than 20 points wins during the series.
While the lineups may have contributed to the change, the Thunder's players believe it was because they did not play with enough intensity.
"Schemes and Xs and Os, it all goes out the door," Kevin Durant said, according to AP. "We've just got to play harder. They did last game, so we got to match up."
Russell Westbrooks also confirmed the key to overcoming Spurs is defense.
"We know their plays, they know our plays, and we just have to be able to execute with maximum effort to give ourselves a chance to get a stop," he said, according to AP. "That's what it comes down to."
Russell Westbrook played his finest game in Game 4 according to TNT Sports commentators. While Kevin Durant put in 31 points, Westbrook had 40 points, 10 assists, and five assists. With Serge Ibaka unexpectedly back from a left calf strain, the Thunder got a morale boost and tied the series 2-2 after a 112-77 loss in Game 2.
On offense, Ibaka has created spacing with his shooting range while giving Westbrook and Durant a trusted third option. He also gives Brooks options.
"We can use a lot of lineups with Serge out there and play different ways," Durant said. "I'm glad he's healthy, he's back, and we're going to need him to continue to bring that energy and effort every time down the court."
In Game 3, the Thunder regrouped and picked up the steam and beat the Spurs 106-97. Injured Ibaka's return from what was thought to be a season-ending injury to play 30 minutes, where he had 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks to boost the Thunder past the Spurs on Sunday night.
While Ibaka said he struggled during the game, he still managed to help Oklahoma City dominate on Sunday and led by 20 with just over three minutes left.
In Game 2, the Spurs shut down the Thunder with a 35 points difference. The final score was 112-77. The Spurs lead the series 2-0 and looks like the current Thunder team are not match for them. Spurs shot over 50 percent in the first two games of the Western Conference Finals and won the Thunder by a combined 52 points.
The Spurs have made 18 of 40 3-pointers in the series and Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili have been extremely efficient in finding their teammates for open shots. The Spurs led the league with 25.4 assists per game during the regular season.
While the Spurs are off to a good start, they continue to hold up their guard as experience tells them that Oklahoma City is preparing for a comeback. In 2012, Thunder fell behind Spurs 2-0 in the Western Conference finals before winning the series 4-2.
In Game 1, Thunder lost 105-122 despite MVP Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook's constant onslaught of shots. Durant made 10 shots from the field out of 19 shots, four out of seven 3-pointers, and four free throws. Westbrook made 9 out of 21 shots from the field, one out of 4 3-pointers, and 5 rebounds. Both players played more than 36 minutes. Derek Fisher scored 24 points and Reggie Jackson had 15 points.
The Spurs' Tony Parker had only 14 points, Tim Duncan 27 points, Manu Ginobili 20 points, and Danny Green had 24 points.
Coming into the Western Conference Finals, the Spurs eliminated the Trail Blazers with five games, winning four and losing one. In almost every win, San Antonio dominated the game with double-digit lead, shutting down any chances of hope for Portland to catch up.
Tony Parker led in scoring and his team's defense limited Portland to 37.8 percent shooting, Even LaMarcus Aldridge, who averaged 29.8 points in the first-round series against Houston Rockets, was limited in scoring under the relentless defense from Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter.
The Thunder also came through to the Western Conference Final by defeating the Los Angeles Clippers with four wins and two losses. While MVP Kevin Durant was triple-teamed by Chris Paul and others, Russell Westbrook and Spurs teammates took advantage of the lose-ends and effectively winning the series.
Durant attributed Spurs' success to the genius of Gregg Popovich, the league's Coach of the Year.
"Their system, they plug guys in and out," he said, according to AP. "They always stick to their same system. They get guys who fit. And they've got a great coach who gets those guys prepared."
