Going into Game 7, the Kings and Blackhawks should know by now that home-ice advantage does not mean anything if they continue to make mistakes and not remain aggressive and focused until the end.
While this is the second consecutive season that the past two Stanley Cup champions are meeting at this point in the competition, both teams are looking to find any opportunities that they can to advance past their opponent to the Stanley Cup Championship Final.
In Game 6, Patrick Kane scored a tiebreaking goal with 3:45 to play in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.
"There's still not much room out there in this series," Kane said, according to ESPN. "Right now, you have to take advantage of your opportunities when you do get space."
In the playoffs, the Kings' leading players include Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, Marian Gaborik, Justin Williams, and Drew Doughty. Kopitar has five goals, 18 assists, and 23 points; Carter has 8 goals, 12 assists and 21 points; Gaborik has 11 goals, 7 assists, and 18 points, and he has also attempted 65 shots, the most than any of his teammates; Williams has six goals, 10 assists, and 16 points; Doughty has four goals, 12 assists and 16 points.
The Blackhawks' top five lead scorers are Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Brandon Saad, Brent Seabrook, and Marian Hossa. Kane has 8 goals, 10 assists and 18 points; Toews has 8 goals, 8 assists and 16 points; Saeed has 5 goals, 9 assists and 14 points; Seabrook has 3 goals, 11 assists and 14 points. Hossa leads his team in attacks with 69 shot attempts, and Patrick Sharp places second with 57 shots. But Sharp has only put in three goals and 5 assists that resulted in eight points.
Kings' goaltender Jonathan Quick has 25 save attempts but allow 4 goals in the last game. Blackhawks' goaltender Corey Crawford has allowed three goals out of 29 save attempts in the last game, resulting in a 89.7 percent blocks. Both goalies save percentage fluctuated between the range of around 84 percent to 92 percent.
The winner of Game will host the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.
The Kings continue to pull away from the Blackhawks after turning the table since Game 2's 6-2 win. In Game 3, the Blackhawks lost by a single goal with 3-4 final despite having home-ice advantage. In Game 4 today, Blackhawks have the chance to tie the series or risk diminishing chances of defending their Stanley Cup title, and the Kings have the chance to take a commanding lead of 3-1.
Although the Blackhawks won Game 1 and was up 2-0 at the beginning of Game 2. The Kings shelled Hawks' goaltender Corey Crawford for five goals on 30 shots in third quarter, resulting in 5 consecutive goals with no returned goals from Chicago.
While Kings lost in Game 1, they made similar offensive attacks with 17 shot attempts and forced a goal. They regrouped and regained their confidence after Game 2.
Coming into the Final, the Kings mounted an incredible comeback after trailing 3-0 in the best-of-7 series against the San Jose Sharks. And they not only forced a Game 7, but overpowered their northern California rival to proceed to the Western Conference Final.
Before making the comeback, Kings player held onto the mentality of possibility to rally from a 3-0 deficit, and they did it one game at a time.
"You just can't look at the mountain and expect to do it all at once. It's a process to just put games together, put shifts together. And it starts with Thursday night. You can't win four unless you win one," said Mike Richards, who along with Jeff Carter was part of the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers that rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Boston Bruins with four straight wins.
The Blackhawks also trailed 0-2 before defeating the Minnesota Wild in six games, and won the Presidents' Trophy last season.
"I think we're at the same level we were at last year. So that's where we're at. But we like the momentum we have. We like the challenge that's ahead of us, but L.A. is going to be a tough opponent. I know we talked about underestimating Minnesota going into that series. There's no way we'd think of underestimating [Los Angeles]."
