The Wizards are not letting up on Pacers, who lead the series at 3-2. While the Pacers had a 3-1 lead prior to Game 5, they still have the same chance to eliminate their opponent at Verizon Center.
Wizards' John Wall rolled out with 27 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five turnovers in Tuesday's Game 5. These stats starkly contrasted with his stats in the first four games, 16 for 51 from the field, including 1 for 11 from 3-point range.
The Pacers had rejuvenated from their defense slack after winning two consecutive games going into Game 5, but realized that the series is not over yet.
"John actually hit some shots," said Indiana' George Hill, according to AP. "As a guard I've got to get better and try to make it tough on him again, and not let him get off like that."
In Game 2, the Pacers limited the Wizards to 82 point, then a franchise-record low of 63 points in Game 3. In Game 4, the Pacers won by a small margin of 3 points. Despite Wizards' desperation, they were unable to turn the table around.
The Pacers haven't played like this in months. If the Pacers win Tuesday, they will make a second straight trip to the Eastern Conference finals.
"It has been a while," Pacers' coach Frank Vogel said of this team's surge, according to AP. "We've had a lot of guys, and it's been well documented, down the stretch they've had individual struggles that have impacted the team, the team was in a little bit of a rut. "
A key adjustment by Pacers since Game 3 was sending players back on defense instead of emphasizing offensive rebounding. This strategy effectively slowed Washington's quick pace. Pacers is ranked second in defense among the 30 NBA teams.
Wizards won the first game, and Pacers caught up in Game 2, where Indiana's Roy Hibbert shot 10 for 13 and finished with 28 points and nine rebounds in the 86-82 home victory Wednesday.
In Game 1, Hibbert had zero points and zero rebound. And Wizards entered the series after defeating Chicago Bulls and pushed back the Pacers 102-96 with a 1-0 lead in the Playoffs series.
The Pacers won at least 55 games in the season and allowed 96.8 per 100 possessions. While their last seven week's defense performances have left some doubting whether they can defeat the Hawks in the first round, Pacers remain in the Playoffs.
