In a surprising turn of events, Seattle Seahawk's QB Russell Wilson announced his divorce from his wife of two years, asking fans to pray for him during this time.
I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," Wilson said in a statement released earlier today. "Clearly, decisions like these don't come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter."
Wilson, who recently led the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl in February, dated his wife throughout both high school and college before marrying in 2012. CBS Sports reports that the couple maintained a long distance relationship for several years, as Wilson played football at North Carolina State University and Ashton attended the University of Georgia. Wilson was recruited by the Seattle Seahawks after his transfer to the University of Wisconsin.
Following the news of his divorce, the overtly Christian football player tweeted, "God never promises the absence of storms. He just promises to walk with us through them."
This news comes as a shock to fans across the nation, as the couple was known not only for their dedicated marriage but also for their collaborative charity work. Wilson and his wife run The Power of Mind Foundation and often donate money to other charities such as the Seattle Children's Hospital.
Wilson is outspoken about his faith both on and off the football field, frequently posting religious messages on social media and referencing his faith in press conferences and interviews.
Following his Super Bowl win, the QB led his teammates in kneeling on the field, giving glory to God. Later, in an interview with Mars Hill pastor Mark Driscoll, credited God for his success in football.
"I believe that God has given me a right arm and for some reason even though I'm 5'11 to be able to make the throw and make great decisions on the field and all that."
The belief that his talents are a gift makes Wilson view his accomplishments with humility.
"I try to live humbly...without Him, I wouldn't be where I am today."
The player later told radio station K-LOVE his faith drives him in the sport. "In terms of my faith, that's the number one thing in my life. To be able to play the game of football...I give all the glory to him."
