Pirates starter Gerrit Cole went seven innings on a yield of six hits and two runs, both on Matt Carpenter's fifth-inning home run. Cole walked two and fanned three. He made 108 pitches, which worked out to about 15 an inning.
Shelby Miller was on the bump for St. Louis, surrendering five runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. St. Louis has lost two of its last three games.
The Pirates won 10 of 19 versus the Cardinals last season, winning seven of the 10 meetings in Pittsburgh.
