With more Olympic events than ever before, competition for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games will begin one day prior to the Opening Ceremony. Figure skating competition begins Thursday, Feb. 6, with the team event pairs and men's short programs. NBC will begin its primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics events on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
South Korea's Yuna Kim is the gold-medal favorite on the woman's side, she will compete on Feb 19 and Feb 20 in ladies short program and free skating while three-time world champion Patrick Chan of Canada will be aiming to win his first Olympic medal in the men's singles.
In addition to the singles, pairs and ice dancing events, a figure skating team contest will also be held in Sochi - marking the event's debut on the Olympic programme. Ten countries will send out one entry in each of the four disciplines: men, women, pairs and ice dance. Points will be awarded to each skater/couple for their routines and the team with the highest number of aggregate points will win the gold medal.
