Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade is officially here and it has started to roll out to the Nexus 4 phone via over-the-air updates, starting Wednesday.
According to Gottabemobile, The Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been found lurking on Google's servers and can now be manually installed by those that haven't already sideloaded using Google's factory images.
Google is slowing adding support for existing Nexus devices. Android 4.4 began rolling out last week for the Nexus 7 and 10 and is currently available on Nexus handsets and tablets only. Unfortunately there is no support for the Samsung-built Galaxy Nexus S. For those using Samsung, HTC, Sony or LG devices, the wait for KitKat is expected to be longer.
The 4.4 update is 238 MB in size and brings the new Google Hangouts instant chat interface, automatic caller ID for nearby businesses, as well as the new ART runtime - a feature that reduces app start times and improves battery performance.
Meanwhile, Motorola has announced that the Android 4.4 KitKat update is now available for the Moto X. Verizon has now initiated the rollout, which will take place in phases.
HTC will begin rolling out Android 4.4 to its HTC One handset in January, and the Google Edition HTC One will be receiving the update earlier, though no exact date is announced yet.
