The United States Capitol was briefly lockdown Thursday afternoon after shots were fired outside the building.
According to the NBC, the suspect - who sources said had a child in the car - was shot and killed, and a shelter-in-place order was lifted at about 3 p.m. At least one Capitol Police officer was injured during the pursuit.
U.S. Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine said that all shots had been fired by police officers trying to stop the woman's car, and they believe there was a child in the car during the chase.
The car is is a black Infiniti with Connecticut plates, later a child was taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
"We have no information that this is related to terrorism, or is anything other than an isolated incident," Dine said. He gave no information about the driver's identity, or a possible motive.
Witnesses said they heard multiple gunshots. The vehicle first slammed into a post near the White House at 15th street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. It then fled east to the Capitol.
Two eyewitnesses said Capitol Police fired multiple shots at the black sedan on Constitution Avenue near the Hart Senate Office Building. Two people - including a child - were removed from the vehicle.
According to a White House official, President Barack Obama was briefed on the incident.
"The President was briefed on the reports of gunfire on Capitol Hill this afternoon. White House staff are in touch with law enforcement and monitoring the incident," the official said.
The shooting rattled the U.S. capital three weeks after a government contractor opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard, about 1.5 miles from the Capitol, killing 12 people and wounding three others before he was shot to death by police.
