Missy Franklin, one of the U.S. stars of last summer’s London Olympics, won her third gold medals on Day 4 of swimming at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona.
Missy Franklin won her third gold medals on Day 4 World Championships.
"I'm very happy after winning three gold medals, this is my first best time of the meet, I swam under 1:55 so I'm ecstatic." Franklin said.
Franklin was a major star in London, winning four golds and a bronze, but she finished fourth in the 200 free — missing a medal by one-hundredth of a second —and fifth in the 100 free.
The 18-year-old American entered eight events, giving her a chance to match Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win that many events at a major championship.
But after a tough double on Tuesday and a lackluster showing in the morning preliminaries, Franklin and her coach, Todd Schmitz, decided to scratch the 50 backstroke — a non-Olympic event that she swims mainly for fun.
Double Olympic champion Yang Sun from China secured his second gold medal in the 800 meters men's freestyle on Wednesday. Silver went to Michael McBroom from the U.S.A., who came through in the second half of the race and finished in 7:43.60. Canada's Ryan Cochran won the battle for bronze.
