Having the name of “Gifted Son of Investment” in Taiwan’s financial world, Fubon Investment Firm President Dexing Hu recently shared about the insights that he received in his professional career and the vision that God gave him for the second half of his life through a local Christian radio broadcasting station in Taiwan.
Hu has worked for 13 years in JP Morgan Investment Firm and Morgan Stanley Investment Firms in Taiwan. He was baptized in 2004 and got married with Rose Tsou, Yahoo Inc’s senior vice president in Asia, in 2005, which attracted much media attention. In recent years, Hu has been invited to give sharing at churches.
Commonly known as the "Godfather" of the financial investment word, Hu said that "Can't catch it" is his confession towards the unpredictability of the changes of the financial market. Nobody can predict whether there will be another financial tsunami just as it is difficult to determine how global warming affects the weather. When tsunami comes, situation changes, you can complain and self-torture, or you can begin learning, “so compared to knowledge of product, skill (ability to facilitate and communicate), what’s more important in today’s career fields is our attitude within”, he said. When the situation suddenly changes, can you still be responsible, honest, think positively, and partner with others? These attributes make a lot of difference.
“Today’s corporations are willing to raise talents, but compared with IQ, EQ, they value AQ (adversity quotient) more, for it is the ability to problem solve and endure under pressure in adversities,” said Hu. He shared how he was initially very happy when he became the CEO and president of the investment advisory Firm in 2004, but the unfamiliar new territories and the continuous drop of the market, and conflicts with his boss then caused him to want to quit at many times.
“Maybe it was the guidance of God that I was just baptized then and have actively participated in the small groups. The environment of the small group then was immediately after singing the graceful praise songs everyone would begin to complain about their boss and colleagues during sharing time. However, after I’ve read the gospel book of Matthews where Jesus said to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, the brothers and I promised to pray for the people who persecute you in the company beginning that week despite its difficulties.” At first, they were praying very unwillingly, but in the process Hu began to develop a heart of compassion for his boss and began to repent of his narrow-heartedness.
“Financial tsunami and abnormal changes in the environment will definitely occur in the future,” said Hu, “but I began to learn humility, repentance, then God came to prune me.” Therefore, whenever he faces setbacks he would sincerely thank the Lord for giving him the opportunity to learn, grow, and experience, for he believes deeply that God has a wonderful plan behind every matter. In addition, the word of scripture has given him great comfort, such as be joyful always, pray continuously, give thanks in all circumstances, for it is his big secret that if he obeys and do as commanded, then many unhappy things in family and work place will quickly pass by.
Upon entering the second half of his life, Hu shared the changes in his mindset. In the last couple of years, he has always wanted to experience a breakthrough, especially after believing in the Lord, “God also continues to speak to me in various ways; in the book of Ephesians, we are originally his creation, created in Christ Jesus, so that we can do good, which is what God has called us to do; Peter Drucker, father of modern management once said ‘Do the things right, do the right things’, which sounds particularly ear-piercing.”
From pursing success in the first half of my life to searching for meaning in the second half, Hu realized that true success comes not from conquering, but from helping.
“The place that God wants to use me is in the career places, and the definition of success depends upon on how many people I can help,” he said.
Lastly, Hu testified that strength and wisdom comes from above, “Because God loves me, so I can love others as myself; apart from God there is nothing, relying on him then he will add strength to me.”
