Hebrews 10:23

23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Sad to say, the world we live in frequently places little value on words. We’ve seen politicians retract campaign commitments once they take office. And people swear to tell the truth in court, but nonetheless, some resort to falsehoods for self-preservation. It’s difficult to know whom we can trust.

Thankfully, there is One who keeps His word and never changes. As today’s verse tells us, “[God] who promised is faithful.”

Since we can be confident that the Lord will do what He says, we should familiarize ourselves with His promises. Scripture is filled with them. For instance, Jesus gave His disciples this assurance: “In my Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). And Hebrews 13:5 guarantees, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.”

Why does the Lord make promises? One reason is that they reveal His character. For example, His assurance to stay with us shows His love. And because He carries out every commitment He makes, His power and sovereignty become evident. Second, God’s fulfilled pledges bring Him glory by letting others see His goodness and dependability. Finally, His clear promises offer us hope and comfort in the midst of hardship.

In a changing world where vows are often broken, it’s reassuring that believers serve a God who keeps His word. Think about the hope His promises provide, and praise Him for the way they reveal His character.
