On July 13th the Great Commission Center International (GCCI) disseminated letters calling for support to push a Constitutional Amendment of Marriage law in California. Joining with Campaign for Children and Families, starting from August a coalition of Chinese pastors will appeal for voter signatures in a four months period, and submit a list of signatures by December to the state assembly. The movement is to ensure a proposition for the marriage amendment would be placed on the state ballot next summer.
Taking part in the coalition of pastors include chairman of San Francisco Bay Area Chinese Ministerial Prayer Fellowship, president of GCCI Rev. Thomas Wang, Support Traditional Marriage Foundation SF area coordination chairman Rev. Luke Poon, and Chinese Family Alliance executive director Dr. Bill Tam.
The proposed amendment will call for the sole legalization of marriage between one man and one woman, and also the protection against and governmental abolishment of the institution of traditional marriage. The push for the proposal is largely in response to the proposals AB1960 and AB19 brought forth by Assemblymen Mark Leno and others who attempted to legalize gay marriage through the legislature.
The letter also called for churches to consider amendment to their bylaw with the addition of a sentence stated, "Recognition of One Man, One Woman Marriage Only."
During an interview earlier this month, Rev. Thomas Wang of GCCI commented that the recent legalization of gay marriages in two countries were serious problems to the society. The fact that Canada is next to the United States means that the nation is in danger of the moral hazard as well.
"American Christians should wake up and be careful, and ask for the awakening of the spirit." He said, "Revive! Christians should become God's voice in the society."
Beginning in August, GCCI will send letters appealing for voter signatures to Chinese Christians residing in the state of California; the goal is to collect one million signatures by December. Coordinators for the petition have been set up in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Diego.
