On Tuesday, May 25, the lawyers of the Alliance Defense Fund and the State argued that the San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom acted outside the law, and called for the nullification of the 4,000 gay “marriage” licenses already sanctioned.
Following the hearing, the ADF chief counsel Benjamin Bull expressed, “We feel extraordinarily good about how the arguments went. Two things became crystal clear; one, that the mayor and the clerk acted outside the law. Two, that the purported marriage license amount to nothing more than pieces of paper.”
“The court seemed to recognize both those points. As Justice Marvin Baxter said, the city made a mess,” added Bull. “ As another justice said, if there’s any detrimental reliance on these licenses the couples have only the city to blame, and no one else.”
The court will issue the ruling for the two cases - Lockyer v. City and County of San Francisco and Lewis v. Alfaro – in 90 days.
The ADF encouraged Christians to continue praying, and said the hearing is just the beginning of the battle.
“Please do not stop praying! It is your prayers – along with God’s grace – that made the difference today. But this is just the beginning of the battle – we must continue to come before the Lord and lift up marriage and the family before Him. Working together – and our knees – I am confident we will win,” the ADF released in a statement.
“Thank you for your faithful prayers and support that have made it possible for ADF to show up and defend marriage and the family.”
