Evangelicals are taking action in Seattle to defend traditional marriage. Hundreds of churches will gather May 1 at Safeco Field in Seattle, the stadium where baseball's Seattle Mariners play, for an event, entitled “Mayday for Marriage.
One of the event organizers, Dr. Ken Hutcherson says that there is good reason to hold the event.
"When you hear the mayday call with ships and planes, everyone comes with their available resources," he said. "And we as a church have called out a mayday for marriage."
According to Matt Daniels, president of the Alliance for Marriage, which drafted the Federal Marriage Amendment, many churches across American are mobilizing Christians to let their voice heard regarding gay marriage issue.
"There's no question, the tidal wave is beginning. The sleeping giant is waking up. This is just the beginning," Daniels said. "There is more to come, and it's exactly what we should be doing."
In San Francisco, 150 churches in the city organized a march to protest against gay marriage, yesterday, April 25. Nearly 7,000 Christians, mostly Asian Americans participated in the march.
In Atlanta, African-American churches organized and convinced state to send marriage-protection legislation to the ballot this November for voters to approve.
"The more that the Church, along with other communities of faith and other ordinary Americans, makes its voice heard, the more we can do our duty as citizens in a democracy," Daniels said. "Now is the time, because this summer the courts are going to begin the process of destroying marriage, unless we support a democratic response in the form of a marriage amendment."
