Columbia, South Carolina -- The YWCA in the city of Columbia, South Carolina marked its 90th anniversary last Thursday as it moved to a new location. With March being Women’s History Month, the YWCA’s anniversary was more meaningful.
The local YWCA in Columbia has played an important role in providing services for the community and has provided opportunities for college students to gain experiences in the field of social service through YWCA programs. Especially the students at University of South Carolina (USC) have involved in Columbia YWCA programs since 1914, when it was first established.
"It was a great experience. I really felt like I helped people" said Lauren Harper, a second-year advertising student at USC who has been involved with the YMCA/YWCA.
Ann Lichliter, YWCA program director, said it was positive for students to participate in the organization and stressed its benefits for University of South Carolina and the community. Many students majoring in social work and education have volunteered at the organization.
Lichliter said the organization's goal is to be "a leader for positive change in the 21st century" by working with others to empower women and eliminate racism.
"We're excited about our new location because we'll be able to offer programs on site. We are also beginning a healthy lifestyle program and offering aerobic and yoga classes," Lichliter said.
The YWCA offers various programs such as the Women’s Resources program which helps educate women in career fields, the Eureka program, which helps young adults to build leadership skills, and the Family and Camp Services programs, which provides after-school programs for children and a variety of camps over the summer.
