The executive director of Campaign for California Families, Randy Thomasson has released the following comment in response to President Bush's statement:
"President Bush is right to support a constitutional amendment to protect marriage, but not just any amendment will do the job. Protecting the word 'marriage' is not good enough. To hold off attacks by corrupt politicians and judicial activists, we must protect the rights and essence of marriage for a husband and a wife, and say 'no' to so-called 'civil unions' and 'domestic partnerships,' which create 'gay marriage' by another name." "California's experience shows how homosexual activists will take advantage of the word 'marriage.' AB 205, passed last year by Gray Davis and the Democrat-controlled State Legislature, awarded virtually all the rights of marriage to homosexual 'domestic partners.' This is despite the people of California voting overwhelming to protect marriage for a man and a woman."
"In Vermont, all the rights of marriage have been awarded to homosexual 'civil unions.' Civil unions and domestic partnerships are 'gay marriage' by another name. A true-blue marriage amendment will stop corrupt politicians and activist judges from undermining, attacking or replacing marriage. We must protect the rights of marriage for a man and a woman, and the current Musgrave language is woefully inadequate."
Campaign for California Families has joined Concerned Women for America, the nation's largest pro-family women's organization, in supporting the Institution of Marriage Amendment, which reads: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither the United States nor any State shall recognize or grant to any unmarried person the legal rights or status of a spouse."
