Pray & Act: A Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service for Peace and Justice at Washington National Cathedral People of faith will unite to pray for a peaceful alternative to war, then join a candlelight procession led by robed clergy to the White House.
WHAT: A service focused on the link between war and poverty and on preventing poor people -- especially children -- from becoming the first casualties of war. Dr. Kings last Sunday sermon-four days before his death - was on March 31, 1968, at the National Cathedral: We are challenged to rid our nation and the world of povertywe must find an alternative to war and bloodshed WHEN: Monday, January 20, 2003 - 2:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. WHERE: Washington National Cathedral, Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues NW, Washington, D.C. WHO: Service led by: Bishop John Chane-Episcopal Bishop of Washington; Marian Wright Edelman--President, Childrens Defense Fund; Jim Wallis--Executive Director and Editor of Sojourners and convener of Call to Renewal
Other worship participants include: Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches; the Rev. Dr. Felton Edwin May, Bishop, Baltimore-Washington Conference, the United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Alvin Jackson, Pastor of the National City Christian Church and General Moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Leaders of at least 20 denominations will be in attendance.
