Almost 300 InterVarsity students from 14 Chapters participated in a Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Project last Spring. The next Habitat for Humanity Spring Break has been scheduled for Feb 1, 2005 –Apr 30, 2005.
The purpose of an InterVarsity/Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Project is for believers to invite non-believing friends to join them in serving the poor, hearing God's Word, and experiencing the gospel of Jesus Christ in action.
In addition, the one week project accomplishes so much toward overall purpose and vision on campus: building authentic community, revealing Jesus in actions and words to non-Christian friends, demonstrating true faith by serving the poor, encouraging racial reconciliation and developing future leaders.
THE BENEFITS FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROJECT ARE (as listed on Intervasity website)
• Community Building: Forging deeper relationships by spending a week
together.
• Evangelism: Experiencing a week with non-Christians in community.
• Social Justice: Encouraging racial reconciliation while serving the needs
of the poor.
• Leadership Development: Developing skills in potential leaders
(e.g. lead their first GIG, planning skills, etc.).
Habitat for Humanity International began in 1976 as a non-profit Christian housing ministry. In 1989 Habitat began Collegiate Challenge as an alternative school break program. The number of participants has grown phenomenally from 1,200 students its first year to over 10,000 students participating in 2003.
Registration for InterVarsity/Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Project begins on October 25, 2004.
