Currently, the staff of the Interfaith Shelter Network, a program of the Ecumenical Council of San Diego County, is planning to build shelters for homeless women and children through its Transitional Living Program.
Interfaith Shelter Network, which has seven branches through numerous congregations, provides shelter, meals, and overnight supervision to 12 carefully screened and monitored homeless men, women, and children for two weeks.
However, each season, one or more congregations has to withdraw because of a remodeling project or lack of volunteer leadership.
This year, the network will provide extensive training to shelter coordinators and volunteers and the case management agencies who screen and monitor shelter guests.
“Our niche is to serve the situationally homeless,” explained Joe Zilvinskis, Rotational Shelter coordinator. “We’re talking about people who have been homeless less than six months and are truly able and willing to move toward self-sufficiency during their eight week stay in our program.”
At present time, the Interfaith Shelter Network still need volunteers and humanitarian supports.
