To counter the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses by the state of Massachusetts on May 17, the Family Research Council is arming the people with resources about marriage in three new pamphlets.
“The Slippery Slope of Same-sex Marriage” is described as showing “how homosexual marriage is not the equivalent of traditional marriage and demonstrates that gay marriage is not a civil rights issue or a matter of ‘discrimination’.”
“DOMA Won’t Do It: Why the Constitution Must Be Amended to Save Marriage” refutes arguments to the necessity of the Federal Marriage Amendment to battling same-sex marriage. Although the Federal Defense of Marriage Act passed in some states was created for the very cause of preventing same-sex marriage, there is concern the conflicts arising from the rulings in Massachusetts case will eventually nullify the DOMA.
“Deterring Divorce” details the devastating consequences of divorce. As of 2001, divorce rates have nearly doubled since the inception of the “No-fault divorce” law in 1960–which permits spouses to obtain a divorce without mutual consent of the other spouse. The pamphlet educates readers on reforms being made of the law including new laws to implement covenant marriage, mutual consent, longer waiting periods, and premarital education.
President of the Family Research Council Tony Perkins is calling on people to make copies of the pamphlets and pass them out to churches, families and friends.
“This is a crucial moment in America's history,” he said. “Not only will our children ask us where we were when homosexual "marriage" became legal in America, they will ask us what we did.”
Getting the word out is the most sure way of fighting same-sex marriage, according to Perkins, who was the author of the first covenant law.
“If we are to prevail in the battle to keep the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, it will be because you talked to your neighbor, you called your elected officials, you got your church involved. You are the foot soldiers in this battle.”
